In the 1980s, Alcon began developing an IOL that could be implanted through a small incision. Historically, small-incision implantation depended upon foldable lenses made from silicone. This material was originally invented for purposes other than implantation in the eye; therefore, it did not possess exactly the right qualities for use as an intraocular lens. These lenses were thick and demonstrated spring-like behavior that could prove disastrous during surgery. In 1994, Alcon® Surgical introduced the ACRYSOF® Acrylic Foldable IOL.

Abbott Medical Optics is a pioneer in foldable intraocular lenses for cataract patients. AMO was one of the first to develop a small-incision foldable intraocular lens through the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory process and began marketing it in 1989. Foldable lenses were a major advance in cataract surgery because they made it possible for surgeons to insert the lens through a small incision. This meant less trauma to the eye and faster visual recovery from cataract surgery, from months to days.

The Afinity™ Collamer IOL (available in both single piece and 3-piece models) is highly biocompatible. The STAAR Toric™ IOL is designed for cataract patients with astigmatism between 1.5D and 3.5D.
