Vantage Outsourcing Philanthropy: Medical Mission Projects

In addition to our everyday mission of helping bring cataract services and equipment to communities in the U.S., Vantage Outsourcing occasionally packs up a team of management and employees to go on medical missions to impoverished areas of Latin and South America.

Accompanied by an ophthalmologist who also volunteers his time and skills in the service of a worthy cause, Vantage has traveled to:

  • Mexico
  • Guatemala
  • Haiti
  • El Salvador
  • Colombia
  • Honduras

Vantage has also made donations of ophthalmic equipment and supplies to the aforementioned countries and to the Palestinian territories and various countries in Africa.

These mission trips have been rewarding and humbling experiences for employees and client surgeons alike. Our first trip was to Mexico, the success of which gave us the confidence to subsequently travel to some of the poorest areas of Haiti and to equatorial regions of South America — where we learned that cataracts often develop at a faster pace due to the effect of the harsh sun on unprotected eyes.

We have also learned that many less-fortunate people will make extraordinary exertions to have their eyes examined by an American doctor, including getting up before dawn, walking 20 miles or more, and waiting patiently to see the physician without anything to eat or drink. The experience of seeing the smiles on the faces of people who have had their sight restored is always a life-changing and affirming experience.
